Here’s another of our irresistibly decorative fabrics from France – this one a silver ribbed satin brocade fabric that we absolutely cannot wait to have a play with. Call it a flight of fancy but we love the idea of a party skirt in this fabulous silver fantasy, topped off perhaps with a slightly fluffy pink jumper in our ‘Pavlova’ raspberry pink wool knit fabric. As you can see from our picture, surely they were made for each other…
We’d describe our silver ribbed satin brocade fabric as being the equivalent of of a medium-weight suiting fabric in terms of structure – although strictly speaking it doesn’t weigh as much as you’d expect it to. It has very good opacity for its weight and it’s both pliable and stable to work with. It has a more comfortable handle than you might expect to look at it – and those satin-stitched ribs that provide a glamorous yet oddly industrial look to this fabric fabric are held tightly to the surface of the cloth. We’re not sure how a fabric can be as structured as this one is, without being stiff – but as you can see from this video, our silver ribbed satin brocade fabric seems to work a little sparkly magic in its movement.
We can report that it has a smooth handle and isn’t in the least scratchy in feel. As with many of our brocade fabrics, we think that the shaping, almost sculptural qualities of this type of cloth are crying out for pleats and tucks to provide shape. You could try a pattern such as the ‘Eleonora’ by Named Clothing – or indeed you could just have a play and work freehand.

We’d be inclined to cut so the ribs fell lengthwise and also add in some additional length and perhaps some asymmetry. We’re sure you’ll enjoy playing with it whatever you choose.
