If you love a decisive cobalt blue shade but without too much intensity, then this blue striped cotton-linen fabric is one to consider. This is a yarn-dyed fabric which means that those blue stripes are diluted by white weft yarns, making the whole effect more subtle and relaxed. We’re envisaging crisp-but-slightly-laid-back shirts and tops over jeans and under sweaters, as well as shirt dresses. When the weather warms up some more, you might also consider drawstring-waisted trousers for lazy summer days.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our blue striped cotton-linen fabric is a blend of 70% cotton and 30% linen. The cotton provides some structure – but the linen lends this fabric a relaxed bounce in its movement. The chalk-white stripes are each 2mm wide, with 15mm of blue between each pair of white stripes. Those stripes are woven into the fabric, running down the length of the cloth. It has a less-refined weave than a formal shirting but more in the way of structure. We’d describe it as a lighter-to-medium-weight dress fabric.
What does this fabric feel like?
This is a fabric which is soft and gentle to the touch; it feels like a very natural cloth and is both pliable and stable.
How does this fabric move?
Our blue striped cotton-linen fabric has lots of life to it. It falls and wafts gently in a breeze but also holds a shape due to the different yarns used. You can see how it moves and drapes in this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
As a shirt or top, this blue striped cotton-linen fabric will work wonderfully by itself and won’t need a lining. As a dress, it might require some additional structure in a fitted bodice; it will also reveal some silhouette with the sun behind it. Consequently a bodice lining and/or a half-slip might be required unless you’re happy with a more voluminous or relaxed style of dress. We wouldn’t hesitate to go with a single layer but you might!
What can I make with this fabric?
Overshirts, shirt dresses, summer maxi dresses, tunics and tops are all options for this fresh blue striped cotton-linen fabric. We think Style Arc have a super range of patterns for shirts and overshirts but we’re also a bit in love with the Oversized Shirt Pattern from The Assembly Line. It has pockets!
Sustainability
Linen is woven from flax which can be easily grown with fewer chemicals required to aid growth and process the fibres. It is generally considered to be one of the most sustainable types of fabric. As a plant-based fibre, cotton is a natural product that can be grown easily. Cotton garments tend to be strong and durable and can be recycled. However current production levels of cotton will be increasingly difficult to sustain, especially when chemicals and large amounts of water are used to process cotton fabrics.
