If you’re looking for layering to take you through days with changeable weather, then this ivory and grey striped french terry fabric is an elegant solution. Unlike our cotton french terries which tend to have more structure, this is draping a fabric as you can imagine. It’s a beautifully soft fabric with a smooth and refined knit on the right side. French terry fabrics are as easy to work with as they are to wear; like familiar friends in our wardrobes.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our ivory and grey french terry fabric is a loop-backed jersey knit, made primarily from soft viscose with a little polyester but with just enough elastane for a resilient stretch-and-return. The grey stripes are knitted into the structure of the fabric, not printed. They’re a mid grey with lighter coloured marled yarn running through them. Each grey stripe is 0.8mm wide; the stripes are at 1.8cm intervals and run horizontally across the fabric.
What does this fabric feel like?
The fine yarns used in this ivory and striped french terry means that the ‘right’ side has a beautifully-smooth feel; the looped inside has a soft and comforting texture.
How does this fabric move?
This french terry hangs and swings with character and falls into soft folds. It has approximately 40% stretch-and-return across its width, with 25% down its length. You can see how it drapes and stretches in this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
Our ivory and grey striped french terry fabric has good opacity for its weight and colour; tops, hoodies and tunics won’t need lining although if you were making a more formal top then you will probably want to ensure that your undergarments tone with your skin colour.
What can I make with this fabric?
Tops, tunics, hoodies, sweater dresses – the list is endless! We don’t think the weight and colour of this fabric make it suitable for trousers unless you’re planning them for nightwear.
We’re very impressed with the range of free patterns available from the Mood Sewciety website – and you might want to take a look at their ‘Idra’ dress for this ivory and grey striped french terry fabric. It would be a way of upping your hoodie game with an exaggerated sleeve cuff and long-line torso.
