We’ve been working hard to find a reliable supply of high-quality, sustainable knitted fabrics; this sumptuous black viscose jersey fabric is the result. It’s been manufactured in the UK using the best quality viscose yarns from a sustainable source in Europe. It’s a truly lovely draping jersey, with a particularly soft handle and an excellent stretch-and-return. It’s perfect for designs that rely on draping, gathering and negative ease (that’s the capacity of a fabric to stay stretched when worn, helping to create interesting shapes).
What kind of fabric is this?
Our black viscose jersey fabric is a draping single-knit composed primarily of viscose, with 8% elastane. It’s a good medium-weight single-knit – we’re weighing it at 280gsm. It is a closely-knit fabric; this means it has excellent opacity for its weight. There’s at least a 60% stretch across the width and down the length of this fabric.
What does this fabric feel like?
This is a beautifully-smooth and soft jersey. It will be very comfortable to wear next to the skin and it’s breathable too.
How does this fabric move?
This classic black viscose jersey fabric is very much a draping knit with a fluid movement. You can see how it moves and stretches in this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
You won’t need to line a shirt, top or tunic made from this fabric, however a dress may require a bodice lining for structure depending on your pattern design. Unless you’re wearing it over bare legs, a dress will need a half-slip to enable this fabric to move against your body.
What can I make with this fabric?
Tops and tunics are very much the forte of this black viscose jersey fabric. You’ll need to find a pattern intended for a knit fabric; garments with more draping designs will work particularly well, as will those which incorporate elements of ruching, gathering or twisting. Dresses are an option too, although ones with plenty of drape and some volume will work better with this fabric since it doesn’t have the capacity to hold a shape. The ‘Dartmouth’ Top from Cashmerette takes advantage the capacity of this fabric to wrap and fit your shape with elegance.
Sustainability
Viscose fibres are produced using cellulose which for this fabric, has been extracted from sustainable wood. As such it is a plant-based fabric, however unless stated otherwise, chemicals will have been used to produce the viscose yarns used in textile production.
