We love to take advantage of the winter season to try out some popping jewel colours. This richly-glowing gold wool mix knit coating fabric is one of three colourways we have of this unusual coating fabric. It combines the flexibility of a knit with the resilience and structure of a woven fabric. It has the softly-textured handle of a boiled wool and and a depth of colour worthy of your dreams.
What it isn’t, we should warn you, is a double-sided boiled wool. The reverse of this fabulous gold wool mix knit coating fabric is simply the underlying knit. If you’re planning an unlined jacket then you’ll want to make sure your design doesn’t rely on a double-sided fabric for the lapel. You’ll need a facing or a lining (click here for some luscious suggestions!) to maintain the finish on that type of garment – although we can confirm that a cut edge on this gold wool mix knit coating fabric doesn’t fray.
However this is a fabric that has all the cosy drape that you’d expect from a boiled wool. You can see how it wraps, drapes and move in this video.
We’d describe this as a robust medium-weight coating fabric that with a good lining, will keep you warm in the nippiest of weather conditions. It has very good opacity yet isn’t a bulky fabric; it’s pliable and easy to work with. Coats, jackets are obviously the forte of this glowing wool mix knit coating fabric. At the same time we’d urge you not to ignore its potential for short snappy skirts over opaque tights, boots or brogues.
If you’re heading down the coat route however, we’d suggest that a pattern like the classic straight-cut ‘Bamboo’ coat from Waffle Patterns would be a great choice.
35% wool, 65% polyester
We recommend spot- and dry-cleaning wool garments, particularly if they’re lined. If unlined, garments can be washed on a handwash or wool cycle. Find out more on our About our fabric pages
