Summer isn’t only the perfect time for linen fabrics, it’s also an opportunity to indulge in colours that can take on bright sunlight and stand up for themselves. That’s certainly the case with this vibrant turquoise linen fabric that we can’t wait to show off. Blue-green colours such as these are notoriously difficult to pinpoint; any individual light source will have affect how it is perceived. That said, we would describe this one as leaning slightly towards the green edge of the ‘turquoise’ spectrum although we would remind you of our free sample service if you’re in any doubt.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our turquoise linen fabric is a light-to-medium-weight (170gsm) 100% linen fabric. It has a stable and lightly-slubbed weave. The slubs are part of the character of a linen fabric and although they’re not overly obvious, they provide a distinctive texture to this fabric.
Don’t forget that there’s no ease in linen-rich fabrics so you’ll need to factor that into your garment choice and sizing.
What does this fabric feel like?
This is a crisp fabric but smooth and soft to the touch despite the evident texture in the weave. It’s breathable and our experience with this weight of linen is that it will soften up very quickly but retain its structure too. It’s a fabric which will be cool and comfortable to wear next to the skin.
How does this fabric move?
This is a lively fabric which falls, bounces and swings beautifully, but which will hold a shape with character. You can see how it moves in this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
You won’t need to line a shirt, top or tunic made from this fabric; the colour, weight and print pattern mean that although it’s a lighter-weight fabric it has good opacity for its weight. You will however, want to pay attention to your undergarments and perhaps consider colours that don’t contrast with your skin tone. A dress may require a bodice lining depending on the design and a more fitted skirt or dress without obscuring folds would need a half-slip or a lining to enable movement across hosiery and obscure a silhouette with the sun behind your garment.
What can I make with this fabric?
Our turquoise linen fabric would work particularly well for tops, overshirts and tunics in which the design was simple enough to showcase the print. Simple summer dresses would also be an option. We love the easy breeziness of the ‘Filippa’ dress from Fibre Mood. Wear it open over shorts or trousers – or as a simple shirt dress.
Sustainability
Linen is woven from flax which can be easily grown with fewer chemicals required to aid growth and process the fibres. It is generally considered to be one of the most sustainable types of fabric.
