At first glance we thought this softly-vibrant fabric was a cotton poplin. In fact this is is a lightweight lavender cotton twill fabric with excellent opacity and perfect for warmer-weather separates.
What kind of fabric is this?
This is a 100% cotton fabric with the distinctive diagonal twill weave pattern providing structure, a little ease on the bias and excellent opacity. It’s very slightly heavier than a cotton poplin and is a refined fabric with a lovely finish and a close weave.
What does this fabric feel like?
Our lavender cotton twill fabric has a smooth, crisp handle. Although it’s not a soft or ‘floppy’ fabric it will be cool and comfortable next to the skin as a pair of trousers. It’s not at all bulky; it’s very pliable and easy to work.
How does this fabric move?
This is a fabric with the ability to hold some shape. It doesn’t drape or flow; it falls into angled folds. You can see how it moves and drapes in this video.
Will I need to line this fabric?
Despite the fact that it’s a much lighter weight than our usual cotton twills, this lavender cotton twill fabric has very good opacity. You wouldn’t need to line a skirt or trousers for purposes of modesty or comfort. If you were making a dress, skirt or jacket then you might want to add a lining or self-lining for ease of movement over hosiery or other clothes. Likewise a more fitted garment such as a dress bodice, might require a lightweight cotton or self-lining in order to help with shape and structure.
What can I make with this fabric?
Any summer separates would be perfect in this lavender cotton twill fabric. Pencil or shorter skirts, sun dresses, trousers, casual or unlined fitted summer jackets are all options. We think it would be perfect for the ‘Fiona’ Sundress from Closet Case patterns.
Machine wash at 40 degrees, however we recommend dry-cleaning lined garments. Find out more on our About our fabric pages
