‘Troika’ fine cross-woven aubergine wool suiting fabric

Our latest Italian arrival is this exceptional aubergine wool suiting fabric. It’s a lighter-weight wool which has been very finely-woven in a complex weave pattern resembling a basket weave. That weave is more noticeable in the images than in real life – but the class and quality are unmistakeable. This fabric has been woven with navy blue, deep violet and the occasional purple-brown yarn, all of which give it depth and a little warmth in terms of colour.

What kind of fabric is this?

Our aubergine wool suiting fabric is a 100% wool fabric. We’d describe it as a lighter-weight suiting. It has excellent opacity for its weight. It looks beautiful with crisp whites, pinks, purples, scarlets and rust.

What does this fabric feel like?

This is a fabric with a fairly crisp handle and an exceptionally smooth finish. It will be very cool and comfortable next to the skin as a dress or trousers for instance.

How does this fabric move?

Will I need to line this fabric?

The fine and complex weave of this lovely wool, as well as the superb finish, means that our aubergine wool suiting fabric has very good opacity for its weight, sufficient for wider-legged or semi-fitted trousers to remain unlined although we’d avoid brightly-contrasting undergarments. However if you’re contemplating more structured trousers, a skirt or a jacket, then we’d suggest a lining (or a half-lining in the case of trousers) will help with structure, fit and movement as well as providing additional opacity.

What can I make with this fabric?

We think it would be just fabulous as cross-season trousers – either wide, flowing ones or more tailored and cropped designs. It would also make a classic pencil skirt or even a tailored dress. Relaxed blazers are very much on trend at the moment we know Kwik Sew pattern 3715 very well; it would be a fabulous choice for this fabric. However a dress would also be an option and we’ve spotted this stylised Milton Pinafore from Peppermint Patterns – we think this fabric would make a elegant choice for that fit-and-flare silhouette.

Sustainability

Wool is a natural fibre, which uses much less water and fewer chemicals to process than many other fabrics. It is long-lasting and can be repaired, all of which make it a more sustainable choice. This wool cloth has been manufactured in Italy which means it will conform to EU standards for sustainable and ethical production.

Fabric preparation

Steam gently before cutting, holding a steam iron 1 inch away from the wrong side of the fabric, working down the length. Use a steam iron and a pressing cloth to press areas of the garment during construction where necessary.
