We love these versatile, easy-to-work-with, easy-to-wear stretch sateen fabrics. This white stretch cotton sateen fabric has arrived for the season and we think it will be the perfect choice for summer, whether ‘sharp’ or ‘laid-back’ is your choice of wardrobe.
We’d say that this white stretch cotton sateen fabric lay towards the lighter-weight end of the medium-weight cotton sateen bracket. It is finely woven, extremely well-behaved and easy-to-work – not at all bulky. Despite that, it has good opacity for its weight and colour. It has great stability and structure – this is a crisp fabric that can pleat and hold a shape well as you can see from this video.
Our white stretch cotton sateen fabric is a bright white, not leaning towards blue, grey or cream. It’s ready to be dressed up or dressed down as you choose. If you’re looking for a white fabric able to cope with coloured knickers under trousers (let’s get down to business here) then this probably isn’t quite what you’re looking for. Our ‘Gotta wear shades’ stretch white cotton drill fabric is probably the one for you. However if you’re looking for a light summer jacket, able to be worn unlined, a fitted dress with a self-lining on the bodice, a shift or a tunic – then here’s your fabric. If you’re prepared to pay attention to the colour and profile of your underwear, then semi-fitted trousers or skirts will also be options, you’ll find.
We don’t have the precise percentage of spandex in this fabric (we’d guess at around 2% to 3%), but the stretch here is limited – it’s designed more for ease across fitted shoulders, bodices and hips than as a design element in itself. However that potential to fit well, together with its breatheabilty will make for good-looking as well as eminently wearable garments such as this ‘Janet’ Jacket from Style Arc.
It’s a lined jacket – but you could easily adapt it to an unlined version with bound seams.
Machine wash at 40 degrees, however we recommend dry-cleaning lined garments. Find out more on our About our fabric pages
