We love the coloured shading in this cerise, blue and mauve floral cotton fabric. Reminiscent of a watercolour, the part-blended tones are crisp against the ivory background and elevate this traditional entwined floral design.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our cerise and mauve floral cotton lawn fabric is a lighter-weight closely-woven cotton lawn. It’s woven from long-fibred ‘Pima’ cotton; strong, fine cotton yarn which results in a smooth, refined and high-quality cloth.
What does this fabric feel like?
This fabric has a soft, smooth and cool handle. Although there’s a light texture, it’s very soft and not at all stiff.
How does this fabric move?
Our shaded mauve floral cotton lawn fabric wafts beautifully when it catches the breeze. It’s not a fluid fabric despite its light weight; rather it has a crisp swing and falls into rounded folds as you can see from this video.
Will I need to line this fabric?
The close weave and the print pattern remove the need for lining a top or shirt. It’s cool and comfortable next to the skin. However a more fitted dress bodice will probably require a lining for added shape and structure. A skirt or dress will require a half slip in order to move over hosiery although if worn over bare legs as a summer frock we’d be happy to wear it with neither a lining nor a slip, certainly for less formal occasions.
What can I make with this fabric?
We think this fabric is perfect for summer tops and blouses – and, we think, gently-falling maxi dresses. We’d be inclined to make the most of its lighter weight with ruches and softly-rolling gathers, bringing body and movement to a garment without bulkiness.
If you’re considering a shirt then you might want to take a look at the ‘Archer’ Button Up Shirt pattern from Grainline Studio.
We’ve used more than one of our Pima cotton lawn fabrics to recreate this pattern design – and can report that it sews up beautifully. You can find out more about our version in this blog post.
