This slightly muted, yet clear blue tone of this french navy satin-backed crepe fabric is the latest colourway of this rather special yet versatile fabric. We adore these luxurious yet relaxed fabrics which have fabulous movement and the ability to gracefully reveal a shape underneath. Our french navy satin-backed crepe fabric is perfect for dressing up in that way – however it also has the potential for classic, elegant daywear. The face of the fabric is a calm, refined shade of navy blue – very much not a dark navy but much, much softer than a royal blue. It’s backed with a gleaming matt satin finish offering a myriad of silvery-blue tones.
This classic spring-evoking shade of navy blue is delightful with neutral ivory, cream and stone as well as more vibrant shades of green and rust. We’ve photographed it with our ‘Hestercombe’ primula-printed floral viscose crepe fabric, where it serves to make the blue elements in that pattern pop out. We think they work wonderfully together. Our french navy satin-backed crepe is a fabric with a fabulous drape yet with plenty of structure to enable it to work for a wide range of garments. Dresses, skirts, trousers, suits; tops and tunics too – our french navy satin-backed crepe fabric is immensely versatile we think. Although not overly heavy in actual weight, it has good opacity and the handle and thickness of a medium-weight suiting fabric. It has a classic crepe texture on its surface, but with a somewhat smoother feel than a classic wool or triple crepe, for instance. However that’s only part of the story. Don’t dismiss the reverse side of this french navy satin-backed crepe fabric. We’ve folded it back in our images and video so you can see the delightful contrast in textures that can be achieved by using both sides of this fabric in a garment. Collars, lapels, cuffs, trimmings – all of these can be lit up using the satin side of this fabric which is slightly lighter in colour and with a fabulous lustre. In fact you could go the whole hog and use the reverse side of this fabric for your whole garment.
