This black cotton twill fabric is the latest addition to our collection of cotton drills and twills. If you’re looking for a fabric to transform into classic cropped trousers, a fitted skirt or a short A-line shirt to hold a shape, then this is the fabric that will do that and more. Every wardrobe has room for a staple item or two made from this classic, classy but low-key fabric.
What kind of fabric is this?
This is a cotton twill fabric sitting towards the heavier-weight end of the medium-weight bracket, although it’s pliable and not bulky. It has the distinctive diagonal twill weave that you’d expect. Although there’s no stretch content in this black cotton twill fabric, there’s some ease across the bias of the fabric as a result of the weave construction.
What does this fabric feel like?
This is a sturdy fabric with a smooth, crisp feel. Although it’s not a soft fabric it will be comfortable next to the skin as trousers or a skirt.
How does this fabric move?
Our black cotton twill fabric is a fairly robust fabric which holds a shape. It will soften with washing and wearing but it’s inherently a crisp fabric which doesn’t drape.
Do I need to line this fabric?
Trousers or a utility skirt; even a casual coat or jacket won’t require lining, although visible seams will need to be finished well. However for more structured jackets or formal garments, a lining will add structure and will help with movement across the body as well as taking them on and off easily.
What can I make with this fabric?
Trousers, skirts, jackets and trench-style coats are all options. Pinafore dresses and simple tunics will also work well. Our classic black cotton twill fabric has no stretch content, however due to the twill weave, there is a little ease across the width of the fabric. Cut your trousers down the length of the fabric as you usually would, and your cigarette pants, clamdiggers, capri crops – or whatever your legwear of choice happens to be – will give just a tiny bit. However that ease is nowhere near what spandex will give you and so you’ll need to make sure your pattern has some ease factored into its design.
Fancy a pair of black jeans? Our black cotton twill fabric would be perfect for the ‘Lander’ Pant by True / Bias which we know is a current favourite for lots of you (we’ve downloaded a copy too – watch this space…)
Machine wash at 40 degrees but we recommend dry-cleaning lined garments. Find out more on our About our fabric pages.
