This enigmatic soft green Tencel piqué fabric is the latest of our Tencels to arrive in the ClothSpot studio. This is an extremely versatile fabric which lends itself to a wide range of garments – jumpsuits, relaxed dresses, elegant tops and flowing trousers. The shade of green here is an incredibly subtle one – we colour-balance our images under a specialist light designed for that purpose but would suggest that if you’re matching then it’s worth requesting a free sample. It’s a very soft shade of olive; warmer in some lights and cooler in others. It looks lovely with crisp whites, earthy reds and terracottas and warmer-toned neutrals like stone and cream.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our soft green Tencel, piqué fabric is a 100% Tencel cloth. It’s a medium weight dress fabric (225 gsm) with a close piqué weave but one that’s been used to create a longitudinal rib texture rather than the more usual ‘waffle’ effect of a piqué. It has excellent opacity for its weight. Tencel fabrics are manufactured from plant-based cellulose using a closed-loop production method in which water is recycled and there are minimum waste products. They’re breathable and resist fading.
There’s no ease in this fabric so you’ll need to factor that into your garment choice and sizing. You’ll also need to pre-wash your fabric to ensure that any initial shrinkage is removed prior to cutting.
What does this fabric feel like?
This is a smooth, bouncing fabric; cool to the touch with some texture in its weave but supremely comfortable next to the skin.
How does this fabric move?
This soft green Tencel piqué fabric is a draping cloth which falls and swings gently with a beautifully-soft ripple. You can see how it moves in this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
You won’t need to line a shirt, top or tunic made from this fabric, however a dress may require a bodice lining for structure depending on your pattern design. Unless you’re wearing it over bare legs, then you’ll need a half-slip to enable this fabric to move against your body.
What can I make with this fabric?
Our soft green Tencel piqué fabric is a versatile fabric which we think will lend itself to rippling overshirts, tunics and relaxed, draping dresses that make the most of the lively movement of this fabric. Loosely-fitted trousers will also be an option; we think it will be particularly suited to draping jumpsuits like the ‘Riva’ Jumpsuit from Fibre Mood which recommends a medium-weight, draping fabric.
Sustainability
Tencel fabrics are manufactured from plant-based cellulose using a closed-loop production method in which water is recycled and waste is kept to a minimum which also makes this a more sustainable option.
