If you were under the impression that wool melton fabrics tended towards the sober and serious, then this wool and cashmere purple melton fabric should disillusion you for good. This is the fabric to add a whole new dimension to your inter wardrobe – imagine shrugging on your purple winter coat every day – how could you not smile?
Being very honest, we knew we’d ordered a purple wool melton (as if that wasn’t enough) but when it arrived there was something a bit suspicious about it. In a good way. That handle was just a little too soft and silky for even the loveliest wool melton – and sure enough – there’s 5% cashmere in here. Not a huge amount it’s true – but you’d be amazed at the difference it makes to the feel of this purple melton fabric.
The construction of this purple melton fabric makes it easy to work. It leans towards the lighter-weight end of the medium-weight melton bracket – and it’s as dense and opaque as you might expect. However this is also a pliable yet stable fabric with a sense of movement and folding drape as you can see in this video.
We suspect that our wool and cashmere camel melton fabric would make a fabulous winter coat, although it’s possibly not quite set for the -15 degrees we had in these parts a few years ago. However depending on the weight of your lining, it’ll keep you toasty at the bus stop most days. Since it’s not an overly weighty fabric we suspect that it would also make for a delightfully-stylish jacket or skirt suit that would work season after season. We’re not entirely convinced about using it for trousers – you’d have to know that you were in for a cold winter – however it would certainly be comfortable enough due to the beautiful finish. We’ve photographed it with our ‘Artichaut’ purple-printed draping grey viscose twill fabric since the tones of cerise and purple in that print echo perfectly the vibrant, warm shade of purple in this melton. As too, do the stripes in our ‘Callander’ soft navy blue wool plaid fabric.
On the pattern front, we hear that a number of you are eyeing up the Tessuti ‘Oslo’ coat pattern. Far be it from us to discourage such fabulousness – we think our purple melton fabric would be perfect for the job.
