This soft navy blue french terry fabric is a wonderfully-versatile cotton jersey fabric. French terry fabrics are as easy to work with as they are to wear; they’ve become familiar friends in our wardrobes. This is a beautiful-quality fabric with a smooth and refined knit on the right side that belies the likely casual destiny of this classic jersey. The shade of navy blue here is dark but not harsh – it’s muted giving the fabric a laid-back, relaxed appearance.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our navy blue french terry fabric is a loop-backed jersey knit, made with 95% cotton and 5% elastane – that’s just enough for a resilient stretch-and-return of about 25% across the width and 40% down the length of the fabric. The weight is 230gsm, making this a good medium-weight french terry. This fabric is an OEKO-TEX 100-certified fabric which means that it is free from harmful substances, is safe to wear next to the skin and has good colour-fastness.
What does this fabric feel like?
The fine yarns used in this french terry means that the ‘right’ side has a beautifully-smooth feel; the looped inside has a soft and comforting texture.
How does this fabric move?
Our navy blue french terry fabric isn’t a fluid knit – the cotton content means it has some soft structure. However it hangs and swings with character and falls into softly-angled folds. It has approximately 20% stretch-and-return across its width, with 40% down its length. You can see how it drapes and stretches in this video.

Will I need to line this fabric?
Our navy blue french terry fabric has great opacity; tops, hoodies, tunics and even trousers won’t need lining. This is a fabric that will be so comfortable next to the skin and which won’t embarrass you either.
What can I make with this fabric?
Tops, tunics, hoodies, sweater dresses – the list is endless! You could try a simple pair of pull-on lounge trousers, cropped with a slight flare – you wouldn’t even need to hem them – just let the bottoms roll up slightly for a casual finish (this fabric won’t fray!). You could try the ‘Brooklyn’ Pant from Style Arc for size – it’s a relaxed pull-on that will be so easy to wear. However we’re in a hoodie frame of mind at the moment and the popular ‘Hug’ Hoodie from MadeIt Patterns is definitely on our shortlist.
Sustainability
As a plant-based fibre, cotton is a natural product that can be grown easily. Cotton garments tend to be strong and durable and can be recycled. However current production levels of cotton will be increasingly difficult to sustain, especially when chemicals and large amounts of water are used to process cotton fabrics.
