This Tailor’s clapper and point presser is a versatile tool which will help create a professional pressed finish on your garments.
The idea behind the ‘clapper’ function is to help achieve as clean and flat a finish as possible on seams and other elements of your project. Use your steam iron as you usually would, then immediately ‘clap’ down onto the pressed area using your clapper. This will trap the steam and heat in your fabric and with the pressure applied, will help flatten the fabric further.
You can use the oval base for larger areas like this…
…or you can use the narrower top strip of the clapper for seams. The narrow strip is especially useful where you’re pressing a seam in an area where there’s interlining or interfacing that would respond badly to excess heat or steam.
The narrow top strip of the clapper can also be used as a ‘mini ironing board’ for pressing open narrow trimmed seams and for pressing the points of collars and cuffs as shown here:
