As we’ve noted before, we rather like our sateen fabrics – they come in a variety of weights, are versatile fabrics with excellent opacity. The matt-lustrous surface finish reflects just enough light to add interest and depth to the classic plain colourways. We’re particularly fond of this navy blue and lilac floral stretch sateen fabric for a number of reasons.
First, we love the vintage styling, not only of the print but also the satin finish and feel of the fabric. There’s a definite 50s air to this pretty lilac floral stretch sateen fabric – and although we’re not ones to overdo the vintage theme, there are times when the right fabric comes along at the right moment.
Second, we love the colours here. The navy blue background is classic and restrained – and it provides an opportunity for wearing pastels, even if you’re not accustomed to those pale shades. The depth of the background colour prevents the overall effect from appearing too sugary.
Our navy blue and lilac floral stretch sateen fabric is quite finely-woven for a sateen. We’d describe it as a medium-weight dress fabric, but one with excellent opacity. It’s extremely pliable and well-behaved, with some structure but still some drape and elegant movement as you can see in this video.
We think our lilac floral sateen fabric would work beautifully as a skirt or a dress, whether one with a simple shift shape or a design with more structure. It can gather and ruche without adding undue bulk, yet will hold a flare or an A-line shape in the manner of a good-quality cotton poplin.
We rather like this Tulip Dress pattern from Style Arc which can also be used simply as a skirt pattern. We think our lilac floral stretch sateen would hold the skirt shape nicely and would also cope with the structure of the bodice.
The spandex content in this fabric is just the right amount to provide some ease but no more. The stretch is less than 10% across the width of the fabric.
