This recent arrival from Italy is yet another of our jerseys-with-a-difference. This dark purple cotton ponte Roma jersey fabric is a superb quality doubleknit with a beautifully-soft handle. The shade of purple is very deep and solid, but quite muted and relatively warm.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our deep purple Roma jersey fabric has a high cotton content (92%) with the remainder of its composition being elastane. It has more in the way of structure and resilience than our more draping double-knits. However it’s not a bulky fabric; it’s very pliable and will be easy to work. You can find our more about ponte Roma jersey fabrics in this blog post.
What does this fabric feel like?
Despite its evident substance, this remains a soft-handled, pliable doubleknit which feels smooth to the touch.
How does this fabric move?
This ponte Roma jersey fabric might not be a fluid or draping jersey – but that’s not to say it doesn’t hang and move elegantly. It falls easily into angled folds and has an excellent two-way stretch-and-return. The ease both up and down the fabric is around the 25% mark. You can see how it moves and stretches in this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
The excellent opacity and smooth finish of this dark purple ponte Roma jersey fabric means that it will be perfectly comfortable if worn next to the skin. A lining won’t be required for purposes of modesty since this is a near-opaque fabric, although you could choose to self-line the top of a dress or a fitted skirt for additional structure.
What can I make with this fabric?
Tops, tunics, A-line dresses and lighter-weight outerwear too are all options for this purple ponte Roma jersey fabric. We think it’s a tremendously versatile fabric. It has sufficient resilience and opacity for closely-fitted trousers, including leggings. It will also work particularly well as an unlined top, jacket or blazer, particularly where a little shape is required. We think it would be the perfect choice for a simple skirt such as this ‘Halle’ Stretch Skirt from Style Arc.
