REMNANT: ‘Sloe’ black bamboo-cotton jersey fabric 1.85m

We love the versatility of a superior-quality jersey – and this black bamboo-cotton jersey fabric is the latest from a new supply that we’ve managed to locate following the supply-chain upheavals of the last year. This is a fabulous weight of jersey and supremely soft. If you’ve dabbled with yoga or lounging garments from certain well-known online retailers over recent times then the quality and weight of this jersey is going to be familiar to you. We know that the price is more than our previous cotton jersey fabrics – but we hope you’ll agree that the quality of this beautiful single-knit justifies the outlay. This is a rich, deep and solid shade of black – we’re really pleased at the fact that it doesn’t wander off into the realms of green, grey, blue or brown.

What kind of fabric is this?

Our rich black bamboo-cotton jersey fabric is a versatile medium-weight single-knit fabric. Bamboo and cotton are used in equal proportion along with 4% elastane to provide a resilient stretch-and-return of approximately 70% down the length and around 50% across the width of the fabric. The yarn used is fine and the knit is close, providing a fabric with very good opacity for its weight. (We haven’t done a downward dog with it yet, but we think it will pass the test). It’s an OEKO-TEX 100-certified fabric which means that it is free from harmful substances, is safe to wear next to the skin and has good colour-fastness.

What does this fabric feel like?

The fine knit means that this is a smooth fabric with a supremely soft feel. We don’t think your skin will find many fabrics that it would be happier to luxuriate in.

How does this fabric move?

This jersey fabric isn’t a fluid knit – but it hangs and swings with character. You can see how it drapes and stretches in this video.

Will I need to line this fabric?

You won’t need to line a t-shirt, top or tunic; this jersey is substantial enough to cope in a single layer for most types of garment. However a skirt or dress would need a half-slip in order for it to move against the body, unless you’re wearing it over bare legs.

What can I make with this fabric?

Tops, tunics, dresses and lounge trousers would all be options for this classic single-knit. It’s a fabulous base layer for casual dressing and has sufficient stretch and opacity for leggings too. The nature of its drape, structure and stretch capacity means that you can either choose to take advantage of its capacity for gathering and negative ease in a design, as well as its ability to move and drape with elegance. Alice created her Hummingbird Hoodie from The Sewing Revival using the ‘Juniper’ colourway of this jersey – it’s perfect for an outer layer but without the bulk of a fleeced cotton sweatshirt fabric.

Sustainability

As plant-based fibres, cotton and bamboo are natural products that can be grown easily. Garments tend to be strong and durable and can be recycled. However current production levels of cotton will be increasingly difficult to sustain, especially when large amounts of water are used to process cotton fabrics. Bamboo requires only small amounts of water to grow but fibres and/or fabrics will have been transported long distances to the UK.
