This crisp pale blue Tencel twill fabric is unusual in a variety of ways. Inherent in any Tencel fabric is an unparalleled softness coupled with a graceful fall and a muted lustre. This fabric very definitely has the subtle lustre you’d expect for a cloth of its origin and quality. However it’s more structured, crisp fabric than the other Tencels we’ve been delighted to welcome into our collections. This one has more of the quality of a closely-woven suiting; we’d even go so far as to admit confusion with some of the finely-woven Italian wools we’ve seen.
The shade of pale blue here is a fresh and clear. It’s not greyed as in a powder blue – but it’s not without some subtlety. Imagine a clear sky on an early spring day, with daffodils blowing in a slightly chilly breeze – this is the colour of the sky.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our pale blue Tencel twill fabric is a 100% Tencel fabric. It’s a medium weight dress fabric (220 gsm) or a lighter-weight suiting fabric with a closely-woven twill weave. That weave is in evidence only on the right side – the reverse is a smooth, flat weave pattern. It has very good opacity for its weight. Tencel fabrics are manufactured from plant-based cellulose using a closed-loop production method in which water is recycled and waste is kept to a minimum. They’re breathable fabrics and resist fading.
There’s no ease in this fabric except for a little give on the bias, so you’ll need to factor that into your garment choice and sizing. You’ll also need to pre-wash your fabric to ensure that any initial shrinkage is removed prior to cutting.
What does this fabric feel like?
This is a smooth, bouncing fabric; cool and soft to the touch and supremely comfortable next to the skin.
How does this fabric move?
This pale blue Tencel twill fabric is a lively cloth which falls and swings with character and which will also hold a little shape. You can see how it moves in this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
You won’t need to line a shirt, top or tunic made from this fabric, however a dress may require a bodice lining for structure depending on your pattern design. Unless you’re wearing it over bare legs, you may need a half-slip or lining to enable this fabric to move against your body.
What can I make with this fabric?
Our pale blue Tencel twill fabric is a versatile fabric which we think will lend itself to tops, shaped dresses, semi-fitted or tailored trousers and jumpsuits too. We hesitate to deploy the ‘Sha….’ word, but if you wanted a combination of a relaxed jacket and a shirt for spring layering, then this fabric might be right up your street. You could look at the ‘Marley’ Woven Shirt from Style Arc – we particularly like the deep hem that adds a sense of layering versatility to this design.
