Just because it’s summer doesn’t mean you have to wear light colours! We love the mysterious, silvery overtones of this black, taupe and smoke green floral cotton lawn fabric. Whether your penchant is for wafting, floating maxi dresses, ruffles or sharper shirts, this is a beautiful quality fabric that for all its depths, also brings a lift with its silvery-light highlights
What kind of fabric is this?
Our smoke green floral cotton lawn fabric is a beautiful-quality, closely-woven cotton lawn. It’s woven from long-fibred ‘Pima’ cotton; strong, fine cotton yarn which results in a smooth, refined and high-quality cloth. We think this is a particularly soft-handled specimen and the depth of the print colour as well as the close weave means that this is a fabric with very good opacity for its weight.
What does this fabric feel like?
This soft taupe and green cotton lawn fabric has a particularly soft, gentle handle. It still has plenty of life though, holding rounded shapes and by no means flopping without character
How does this fabric move?
The movement of our subtle green floral cotton lawn fabric is a floating waft which will catch a breeze with elegance, as you can see from this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
A top or shirt will be perfectly lovely unlined; as noted, the print and weave of this fabric means that it has better-than-expected opacity. You might choose to line, layer or wear a half-slip under a skirt or dress unless you’re planning to wear it for a less formal occasion, since your silhouette will be visible if you’re standing in front of the sun. We don’t think that’s a problem in a summer frock, especially one that falls from generous gathers, but you might! Our ‘Placket’ plain white Pima cotton lawn fabric would be an option as a bodice lining or as a skirt lining if worn over bare legs.
What can I make with this fabric?
We think this fabric is perfect for summer tops and blouses – and, we think, gently-falling maxi dresses. We’d be inclined to make the most of its lighter weight with ruches and softly-rolling gathers, bringing body and movement to a garment without bulkiness. We thought it might work well as as casual summer version of McCalls M8030, a lovely shirt dress, with soft gathers into a yoke and relaxed dropped sleeves.
