Welcome to our Silk Shirt Kit! If you’re looking for something luxurious, whether for breezing around in the summer months or for high-end layering in the winter, any wardrobe can find space for a silk shirt. Our silk shirt kit is a semi-fitted design, with or without a collar and with options for short or long sleeves. You can choose from a range of silk fabrics and colours and the kit contains everything you need to make one shirt.
About the pattern
Our kit is based on the ‘Mélilot’ Shirt Pattern from Deer & Doe. It’s something of an established classic in the sewing community with its curved lines, long semi-fitted shape and options for short or long sleeves.
Our kit contains everything you need to make either the View A – a long-sleeved, cuffed and collared version – or View B – a short-sleeved collarless version. Of course you can mix and match by adding a collar to the short-sleeved version – just select the appropriate sleeve length from the drop-down lists above.
Our kit is available in the following sizes – but please note that the paper pattern included in the kit only goes up to Size 46. The PDF version of the pattern is available in sizes 48-52, but for those sizes you’ll need to purchase your own copy of your pattern separately. To purchase the kit for those sizes without the pattern, simply select the relevant option from the drop-down lists above.
The Deer & Doe purchase page for the PDF pattern is here. You have the option of piecing the pages together yourself – or emailing your pattern files to a local printer or an online company such as Netprinter who’ll then send on your pattern printout.
About the fabrics
We’re currently offering our Silk Shirt Kit in 2 luscious silk fabrics from a high-end designer via their Italian manufacturer. Click on the links below to find out more about each fabric:
(We’re sorry – we’ve sold out of the other colours including the red silk crepe-de-chine in our pictures. We’re looking for more!)
You’ll need to prepare your length of fabric by hand-washing it first, then carefully drip-drying and pressing it. We recommend pressing on the wrong side and using a pressing cloth, especially when you’re working on your garment.
You might find that starching your fabric is a good way of stabilising it before cutting and working with your fabric. Always test your starch first on an offcut of your fabric!
What’s in the box?
- The fabric of your choice to make up one Silk Shirt in your size (using the sleeve length you’ve selected)
- A paper copy of the ‘Mélilot’ Shirt Pattern by Deer & Doe (unless you have the pattern already or if you’ve selected sizes 48-52 – see above)
- 2 reels of thread to match your fabric
- 11 or 13 (depending on your sleeve selection) 18mm Akoya shell buttons
- A fine ‘Sharp’ sewing machine needle for sewing your selected fabric
- A length of lightweight Vlieseline fusible interfacing fabric for reinforcing the button placket, collar and cuffs
- Tips for sewing with silk fabrics (we’ll be posting a link here).
This kit is suitable for an intermediate sewer who’d like to extend their skills. If you haven’t made a shirt before, we suggest you use the pattern to make up a ‘wearable toile’ in an easier fabric first. You might consider practicing it with a cotton lawn, for instance.
This is a great project for developing your skills and getting to know your sewing machine better.
You might decide that using a ‘continuous lap’ sleeve placket rather than the tailored sleeve placket in this pattern is easier, especially in a silk fabric. Practice both and see how you get on! You can find out more about Alice’s first version of the Mélilot shirt in her recent ‘Shirt Search’ blog post.
Do follow the instructions in the order recommended by Deer & Doe in their pattern. It will make sewing your shirt much easier and will give you a better finish.
If you need to adjust the bust of your pattern either up or down, then Deer & Doe have an FBA/SBA adjustment page on their website – do take a look!
