Textured fabrics in natural fibres are the perfect solution for adding a little formality or structure to your warmer-weather wardrobe. That’s our thinking behind this black and ivory checked cotton bouclé fabric. It’s a dramatic check – but don’t be put off. It’s a tremendously versatile fabric, one which will lift jeans, bring character to a more formal monochrome wardrobe and provide the perfect popping-ground for touches of vibrant shades of red or turquoise, say.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our black and ivory checked cotton bouclé fabric is 95% cotton, making it an easy cross-season wear. Our description of it as a bouclé arises from its textured weave, which comprises yarns of varying thicknesses, some with deliberately-exaggerated slubs. However this is a stable fabric on the cutting table and we’d describe it as sitting towards the heavier end of the medium-weight dres
What does this fabric feel like?
This is a fabric with a soft and textured handle. It’ll be cool and comfortable next to the skin if worn as a dress or tunic, although we think the textured weave means it’s probably not suitable for trousers or shorts.
How does this fabric move?
Although perfectly pliable, this is a fabric that holds a shape. It doesn’t drape or move of its own accord; as a jacket or tunic it will carry a structure. You can see how it moves in this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
You could line this fabric in order to provide additional structure as well as to enable it to move across the body and over clothing layers. That said, as a simple dress or tunic it could be worn without a lining although contrasting undergarments and silhouettes may be slightly visible through the lighter-coloured areas of the fabric.
What can I make with this fabric?
We fell upon this fabric with the ‘Esme’ Tunic from Lotte Jansdotter’s ‘Everyday Style’ book in mind. The dramatic check and shape-holding capacity would be fabulous for this easy-to-wear garment.
