If ever there were a prizegiving for the best ‘dark horse’ fabric, then this marled grey stretch suiting fabric would be a shoo-in for the top prize. It’s an unassuming little number – until you pick it up, take a close look, feel the weight and the resilience of the stretch. And at the point, eyebrows raise and usually a surprised ‘ooOOooh’ can be heard.
With a smooth handle and excellent opacity, this is a medium-weight suiting with a smooth handle. With a blend of silver, zinc and steel grey yarns, there’s a real sense of depth in its construction. It has a good swing to it and moves elegantly as you can see from this video.
We think this is a fabric destined to play a significant role in your wardrobe, whether as a jacket, trousers, skirt or even a winter dress or a lighter-weight coat. It will double as a casual or a work classic; this is a fabric able to be dressed up or down.
The stretch is chiefly across the width of the fabric and is less than 10%. As such, it brings ease and the ability for close fitting in your pattern design, rather than the kind of stretch you might expect from a doubleknit for instance.
The ‘Aava’ Tailored Blazer from Named Clothing relies on a little stretch for its fit – and we think our marled grey stretch suiting fabric would be the perfect candidate for this elegant jacket.
