This slate grey linen fabric is one of a group of linen cloths that have come to us from India. They’re full of character; we love their texture, movement and decisive colours. We’ve test-washed some of the colourways and they respond well, retaining their life and smoothly-textured finish.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our slate grey linen fabric is a medium-weight linen with a very stable but slightly open weave. We think these lovely linen fabrics manage to be at once sophisticated in their structure and drape yet with a sense of depth and authenticity. This is a solid and decisive shade of grey, not leaning to blue or green. It has idiosyncratic linen slubs and texture are very much part of its character.
Don’t forget that there’s no ease in linen fabrics so you’ll need to factor that into your garment choice and sizing. You’ll also need to pre-wash your linen to ensure that any initial shrinkage is removed prior to cutting.
What does this fabric feel like?
This is a crisp fabric and very smooth to the touch despite the evident texture in the weave. It’s breathable and our experience with these linens is that they’re very comfortable to wear next to the skin.
How does this fabric move?
This is a fabric which falls and swings beautifully, but which will hold a shape with character – no limpness in sight here! You can see how it moves in this video.
Will I need to line this fabric?
You won’t need to line a shirt, top or tunic made from this fabric, however a dress may require a bodice lining for structure depending on your pattern design. Unless you’re wearing it over bare legs, then you’ll need a half-slip to enable this fabric to move against your body. However this kind of fabric is usually used for summer-cool and more casual designs where a lining would probably defeat the object of the fabric. A loose dress will reveal some silhouette when backed by sunlight, but no more than is in keeping with the style of garment you’re likely to be considering.
What can I make with this fabric?
Our slate grey linen fabric is a versatile fabric which we think will lend itself to shirts, tunics and simple dresses as much as summer separates. We used a version of this fabric to create a pair of cropped summer trousers using this ‘Fifi’ Woven Pant pattern from Style Arc. The crisp drape of this linen was perfect for holding that flared leg shape as well as being cool and comfortable to wear in hot weather.
Wash at 30 or 40 degrees – see our Fabric care pages for more information.
NOTE: We’d recommend your pre-wash shouldn’t be with differently-coloured fabrics as there’ll be a little dye loss, although not so much that you’d notice the difference in the linen.
