We think it’s always a good thing to have some garments in your wardrobe that you can rely on for elegance, style and a little bit of self-expression, whatever the weather and whatever the occasion. Garments that will work hard for their keep as dresses, separates and more formal suits. Crepe is a fabulous fabric for these demanding roles – and this mauve-taupe triple crepe fabric is a welcome return to our collection of crepe fabrics.
Although mauve-taupe only found currency as a colour name in the early twentieth century – and isn’t a particularly common colour description today – we think it’s the perfect description of this soft purple that leans towards the pink-brown edge of the complex purple spectrum. It’s a colour that looks unexpectedly fabulous with rusts and vibrant oranges – a combination which, if you keep your eyes peeled, you’ll find popping up repeatedly in the 1930s right through to the 1950s.
As a triple crepe, our mauve-taupe triple crepe fabric drapes exceptionally well as you would expect. It has enough weight and substance not to highlight every lump and bump it might encounter – and it moves with exceptional grace as we think you’ll see from this video.
We’d call this a medium-weight suiting fabric or a heavier dress fabric. It has just a little bit of mechanical ease across the width and the bias of the fabric. Our mauve-taupe triple crepe fabric is a bit of a gift for dresses with drape, coat dresses, elegant jackets, skirts and trousers alike. If you’ve a special occasion then this will be a delicious fabric to dress up, in the knowledge that you can keep it as for classic ‘best’ dressing – or decide to get your wear out of it through the season. This mauve-taupe triple crepe fabric has good opacity but for a special garment you’ll want to line it to help with structure and movement. It is a polyester cloth but with that comes washability (although not if you’ve lined it!), crease-resistance and durability. We think our triple crepe fabrics are a bit of a classic; we find they are relatively well-behaved and easy to manipulate providing you take your time to make sure your pattern pieces are placed correctly in line with the selvedge when positioning them for cutting out.
We’ve been experimenting with wide-legged ‘sport luxe’ trousers – our triple crepe fabrics are a perfect fabric choice for those and we’ve lots of suggestions on our ‘Athleisure trousers’ Pinterest board. We used a triple crepe to make up these ‘Leah’ lounge pants from Style Arc. They’ve been worn and washed repeatedly (and suffered many a messy meal, too) yet have endured all this with elegance and resilience.
