We appreciate that there will be those who would prefer to avoid even the pretence of animal products in their wardrobe. However for those who like the ease, cost or peace of mind that an imitation leather fabric offers, we offer this extraordinary tan faux suede fabric. Let us explain the extent of our desire…
We’ve had faux suede fabrics in the past and it seems that every time we introduce a new one, the manufacturing techniques that result in these utterly deceptive fabrics, have evolved still further. Our tan faux suede fabric is a double-sided cloth. One side is slightly less textured and smoother to the touch than the other; we’ve included an image to show the difference and we’re of the opinion that whichever is the ‘right’ side is simply down to personal preference. They look great together – so unlined garments are just fine. All we would say is that having the smoother side to the inside might make it slightly easier to slip your garment on and off over clothing.
This is a very closely-woven fabric; as a result our tan faux suede fabric completely opaque, just as an actual suede would be. (As a consequence we’d recommend a fine ‘sharp’ needle in your machine). When cut it doesn’t fray – meaning that edges can safely be left unfinished. There’s about 10% stretch and it has the most amazing drape as you can see from this video.
There’s a fair bit of weight to a length of this fabric – sufficient to fool your brain into thinking that it’s the real thing. It even sounds like suede when you shake it out – and our brains here still can’t fathom the fact that it doesn’t smell like suede, so deceived are we.
The shade of tan here is a warm, rich caramel colour – not leaning into orange. It looks completely beguiling among the other autumn colours here at ClothSpot this season – perhaps most of all our ‘Dark passions’ olive green & gold printed satin fabric.
So enamoured are we that we’ve decided to use this delicious tan faux suede in our ClothSpot Coatigan Kit. This kit uses Kwik Sew Pattern 4192 to create a simple but elegant and practical waterfall-fronted longline coatigan. We haven’t yet made it up ourselves in this fabric but it’s the perfect fabric for a sophisticated version of this classic design.
