From the ruby chrysanthemums to the chestnut brown background, this stunning ivory and red floral stretch sateen fabric is the perfect way to catch an eye this AW season. Team it as separates with a classy, simple ivory shirt – or as a statement dress – this is a fabric that will lift your heart whenever and wherever you choose to wear it.
What kind of fabric is this?
This is primarily a cotton fabric but one with a beautiful sheen due to the lustrous nature of its sateen weave. We’d describe it as a medium-weight dress fabric. It has a close weave and very good opacity for its weight. The spandex content is minimal (there’s less than 5% of width-wise movement here) – but just enough to add a very little ease for fitted garments.
What does this fabric feel like?
Our chestnut, ivory and ruby red floral stretch sateen fabric has a beautifully smooth handle. It’s cotton, so comfortable to wear next to the skin and breathable too.
How does this fabric move?
This isn’t a fluid fabric – but one with an elegant, rolling drape if used in volume. It’s very pliable and well-behaved to work and has enough structure to hold a little shape at a pleat. You can see how it moves and stretches in this video.
Will I need to line this fabric?
A dress wouldn’t need to be lined for purposes of modesty although you might choose to wear a half-slip in order to enable movement across hosiery. A fitted bodice might require a lining or a self-lining in order to help with structure, although this is a fabric which can cope with a little fittedness due to its structure and stretch content.
What can I make with this fabric?
We think our red floral stretch cotton sateen fabric would work beautifully as a skirt or a dress, whether one with a simple shift shape or a design with more structure. It can gather and ruche without adding undue bulk, yet will hold a flare or an A-line shape in the manner of a good-quality cotton poplin. If you’re considering a fabric for a special occasion then this is definitely a fabric to put on your shortlist.
We rather like this Tulip Dress pattern from Style Arc which can also be used simply as a skirt pattern. We think our brown and red floral stretch sateen fabric would hold the skirt shape nicely and would also cope with the structure of the bodice.
