Just before one of our suppliers closed down during the COVID restrictions, they sent us a last-minute delivery of ponte Roma jerseys. ‘Have you any yellow?’ we’d enquired. ‘A bit – we’ll send you a piece’ came the reply. And so this textured lemon yellow ponte Roma jersey fabric has sat, hopefully, in the corner of our workroom for the last three months, waiting for some chums to play with. All this to explain that this isn’t our usual double-knit. It’s a more structured doubleknit – not draping, but with a finely-ribbed textured on the outside knit surface – which is a paler shade of lemon than the inside. We think it’s best used as outerwear rather than layering or draping. It’s a good quality fabric – just not our regular ponte.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our lemon yellow Roma jersey fabric is the usual blend of polyester, viscose and elastane. As mentioned, the outer surface has a fine horizontal rib and this is a fabric with more in the way of structure and resilience than our more draping double-knits. However it’s not a bulky fabric and will be easy to work. You can find our more about ponte Roma jersey fabrics in this blog post.
What does this fabric feel like?
Despite its texture, this yellow ponte Roma jersey fabric remains a pliable doubleknit which feels soft to the touch on the inside.
How does this fabric move?
This ponte Roma jersey fabric isn’t a fluid or draping jersey – but that’s not to say it doesn’t hang and move elegantly. It falls into rounded folds and has an excellent two-way stretch-and-return. The ease both up and down the fabric is around the 40% mark. You can see how it moves and stretches in this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
The excellent opacity of our lemon yellow ponte Roma jersey fabric means that it would be perfectly comfortable if worn next to the skin. A lining wouldn’t be required, although you could choose to self-line the top of a dress or a fitted skirt for additional structure.
What can I make with this fabric?
Tops, tunics, A-line dresses and lighter-weight outerwear too are all options for this lemon yellow ponte Roma jersey fabric. It will also work particularly well as an unlined top or tunic dress, jacket or blazer, particularly where a little shape is required. We think it would be the perfect choice for a simple skirt such as this ‘Halle’ Stretch Skirt from Style Arc.
