We have some very special fabrics for you this AW16 season. Our charcoal wool tweed fabric is just one of them but we think it’s a pretty amazing place to start.
The quality of this 100% British wool herringbone tweed fabric is exceptional. The reason for that is that it originates from the Abraham Moon mills in West Yorkshire and you only have to look at it, let alone get your hands on it, to understand why it’s so special.
Although we’ve called this a charcoal wool tweed fabric, there is the subtlest-ever hint of violet about it, due to the inclusion of violet-blue yarn in this blend of mid-grey and charcoal. It’s elusive – look at it direct and it almost disappears – catch it in the right light and its there like a fine violet cloud, drifting across the surface of this stunning herringbone weave. You should just be able to pick it up in our close-up image.
Although we’d call this a medium-weight wool suiting fabric, it has a draping quality which completely surprised us. Take a look at this short video clip to see.
Despite this drape, our charcoal wool tweed fabric has very good opacity for its weight and even more special, it has a smooth, refined handle which means that we’d be very happy to suggest using this fabric for trousers as well as all the other jacket, skirt, coat and other tailoring options you might expect. It has a drape and flow which might make it perfect for the Merchant & Mills ‘Strides’ pattern, for example.
If you’re planning a winter coat then this is a fabric that would be wonderful as a cross-season solution. Probably not the fabric to take you through the coldest of winter days, it will be wonderful as a three-quarter length car coat for instance – or perhaps a full-skirted style that will make best use of the swing and flow of this wonderful fabric. Pliable and well-behaved – we think it will be a joy to work with (we’re restraining ourselves for the moment but it’s tough!)
We know that buying a fabric like this represents a fairly major wardrobe investment for the season so don’t hesitate to ask for a free sample if you need to be convinced or inspired – we’ll be happy to oblige.
Our enigmatic and versatile charcoal wool tweed fabric is 155cm wide – there’s a timeless classic just waiting to break out of every metre.
