This rich olive lyocell twill fabric is a colourway of a cloth that has become a modern classic. Lyocell is the generic name for the sustainable manufacturing process that is also branded as Tencel by the Lenzing company. As with a Tencel fabric, lyocell cloth has an unparalleled softness coupled with a graceful fall and a muted lustre. The twill weave of this fabric enhances its drape and the slightly sandwashed finish brings a relaxed subtlety to the colour. The shade is a dark olive, sitting between brown and green. In some lights it appears as a dark gold; in others a khaki. We’ve paired it in our combination images with our vibrant autumnal ‘Seaton’ cotton piqué as well as with our ‘Miller’ camel wool mix twill fabric to show its potential both as a contrasting and toning colour.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our rich olive lyocell twill fabric is a 100% lyocell fabric. It’s a medium weight dress fabric (210 gsm) with a closely-woven twill weave; slightly more accentuated on the right side. Lyocell fabrics are manufactured from plant-based cellulose using a closed-loop production method in which water is recycled and waste is kept to a minimum. They’re breathable fabrics and resist fading.
There’s no ease in this fabric except for a little give on the bias, so you’ll need to factor that into your garment choice and sizing. You’ll also need to pre-wash your fabric to ensure that any initial shrinkage is removed prior to cutting.
What does this fabric feel like?
This is a smooth, bouncing fabric; cool and soft to the touch and supremely comfortable next to the skin.
How does this fabric move?
This deep olive lyocell twill fabric is a lively cloth which falls and swings beautifully, but which will hold a shape with character. You can see how it moves in this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
This is a fabric with excellent opacity for its weight. You won’t need to line a shirt, top or tunic made from this fabric, however a dress may require a bodice lining for structure depending on your pattern design. Unless you’re wearing it over bare legs, you may need a half-slip or lining to enable this fabric to move against your body.
What can I make with this fabric?
Our olive lyocell twill fabric is a versatile fabric which we think will lend itself to shirts, tunics and dresses. Loosely-fitted trousers will also be an option, as will jumpsuits. We think the ‘Melrose’ Boiler Suit from Style Arc would be the perfect instant outfit for this fabric.
Sustainability
Lyocell fabrics are manufactured from plant-based cellulose using a closed-loop production method in which water is recycled and waste is kept to a minimum. That all helps this fabric score highly for sustainability.
