Cotton lawns are something of a summer staple and at the moment they’re disappearing as soon as we post them! We like to make sure we have a selection of non-floral prints on offer and although this fabulous parasol design isn’t new, we love this blue and purple printed cotton lawn fabric. It has the ability to bring a fresh, crisp edge to any of the inky colours in the design; pair it with rich indigos and navy blues, corals or mustard yellows.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our purple printed cotton lawn fabric fabric is a closely-woven cotton lawn. It’s woven from long-fibred ‘Pima’ cotton; strong, fine cotton yarn which results in a smooth, refined and high-quality cloth.
What does this fabric feel like?
This fabric has a soft, smooth and cool handle. There’s a little fresh crispness too – this is a fabric which will be so comfortable to wear in the hot summer months.
How does this fabric move?
The movement of this blue and purple printed cotton lawn fabric is a soft, floating waft which will catch a breeze with elegance, as you can see from this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
A top or shirt will be perfectly lovely unlined, although you might choose to line, layer or wear a half-slip under a skirt or dress unless you’re planning to wear it for a less formal occasion, since your silhouette will be visible if you’re standing in front of the sun. We don’t think that’s a problem in a summer frock, especially one that falls from generous gathers, but you might! Our ‘Placket’ plain white Pima cotton lawn fabric would be an option as a bodice lining or as a skirt lining if worn over bare legs.
What can I make with this fabric?
We think this fabric is perfect for summer tops and blouses – and, we think, gently-falling maxi dresses. We’d be inclined to make the most of its lighter weight with ruches and softly-rolling gathers, bringing body and movement to a garment without bulkiness. However we also think it would make a very cool summer shirt. Kerry found the ‘Cora’ Blouse by Pattern Union which we think would be lovely in this fabric, with its ability to hold a little shape in the torso and sleeves.
