If you’re looking for an incredibly easy fabric to work with – and a fabulous injection of colour into your winter wardrobe, then our soft burgundy boiled wool is one to consider. In a rich, warm, almost rosy shade of wine, it’s an option in our Florence Coatigan Kit, a design perfect for popping on as you dash in and out of the house – or for keeping on inside if you’re trying to resist flicking the heating on for as long as possible…
What kind of fabric is this?
Light and comfortable to wear, boiled wools are knitted fabrics which are then felted to give a soft, air-trapping bouclé finish. Cut edges don’t need finishing (really!) and there’s a little bit of ease (about 10%) just enough for comfort in fitting. Our soft burgundy boiled wool fabric is a 100% wool cloth with a weight of 415g per square metre, placing it in the comparatively thicker, heavier boiled wool bracket.
What does this fabric feel like?
This is a fabric with a beautifully textured but soft handle. It’ll be comforting and gentle next to the skin in areas like the neck and sleeves. It’s also very pliable and well-behaved – not at all stiff to wear.
How does this fabric move?
Our soft burgundy boiled wool fabric has a soft structure but also hangs and swings with elegance. You can see how it moves and drapes in this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
The beauty of boiled wool fabrics is that they provide warmth and structure as a coat or jacket without requiring a lining. If you plan to use it as a skirt, in which case a lining will help with movement over hosiery and across the body.
What can I make with this fabric?
We’re offering our soft burgundy boiled wool fabric as an option for our Florence Coatigan Kit which uses the Florence Coat Pattern from Tessuti. With its reversible textured finish, this fabric is perfect for the turned-back cuffs and elegant long-line front facing of this design. What’s not to love? We think you’ll be amazed at the ease with which you can use it to create your own wardrobe star! Here’s Judy in her indigo blue version of our elegant coatigan.
Fabric width
144cm
Fabric composition
100% wool, ethically produced in Uruguay. Complies with OEKO-TEX Standard 100; no harmful chemicals have been used in the production of this fabric.
Fabric preparation
Steam gently before cutting, holding a steam iron 1 inch away from the fabric and working down the length. Do not press the fabric as the texture will be flattened. Use a cool iron and a pressing cloth to gently press areas of the garment during construction where necessary, first placing a towel between the garment and the ironing board.
Fabric care
We recommend spot- or dry-cleaning boiled wool fabric. Steaming (hang it in your bathroom while you have a shower!) followed by very gentle brushing with a baby brush will also freshen up a boiled wool garment.
