‘Quintessential’ because if there’s a fabric that would never be out of place in a winter wardrobe, then a black wool melton fabric such as this beautiful number would surely be on the shortlist.
As you’d expect, this black wool melton fabric is dense and opaque. Finished to achieve a felted, evenly-textured surface, meltons are not only stylish, classic fabrics for coats and tailoring – they’re also very easy to work with. They don’t fray, they’re stable to cut and handle – and when they’re 100% wool as this one is, they shape beautifully when pressed as part of the tailoring process.
We’d say that our black wool melton fabric is a good medium-weight melton fabric. That makes it perfect for jackets, skirts and coats. With a good lining it will make for an excellent winter coat – but on the other hand it’s not so heavy that it wouldn’t make for a (very) warm pair of fitted trousers. You can see how it moves and drapes in this video.
Our black wool melton fabric has a superb handle – soft and pliable. As with any melton, draping it on the stand was a real pleasure. It stayed where it was put and cut a very elegant line with absolute ease. Among the selection of recent coat styles we’ve spied, longline fitted coats have been very much in the mix and this fabric would be fabulous choice for a style such as this.
Vogue pattern 8346 might be an option for a more fit-and-flare skirted design…
…whereas this Burdastyle pattern offers a simpler cut.
Whatever your choice of coat design, might we suggest our black wool melton coating fabric is deserving of a special lining? You may like to take a look at some options here.
We recommend spot- and dry-cleaning wool garments, particularly if they’re lined. Find out more on our About our fabric pages
