Welcome to yet another Roma jersey discovery! This dark navy structured ponte Roma jersey is the latest of our Italian ponte Roma fabrics with a reassuringly-firm stretch and the potential for creating a wardrobe basic that won’t let you down. This is a very dark navy blue fabric, quite muted rather than a harsh navy. It’s a somewhat lighter weight than some of the structured ponte Roma jersey fabrics we’ve had; still with plenty of opacity and structure but without bulk.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our dark navy structured ponte Roma jersey fabric is primarily a cotton jersey (78%); together with a little nylon and the usual spandex element (4%). It has more in the way of structure and resilience than our more draping double-knits. You can find our more about ponte Roma jersey fabrics in this blog post.
What does this fabric feel like?
Despite its evident substance, this remains a soft, smooth and pliable doubleknit which will be beautifully comfortable next to the skin due to the cotton content. As you might expect, it’s a very stable fabric and easy to work with.
How does this fabric move?
This ponte Roma jersey fabric isn’t a fluid or draping jersey – but that’s not to say it doesn’t hang and move elegantly. It falls into rounded folds and has firm two-way stretch-and-return. The stretch across the width is around the 40% mark with about 15% ease down its length. You can see how it moves and stretches in this video.

Will I need to line this fabric?
We’d be more than happy to recommend this fabric unlined garments, including those with ‘waterfall’ fronts where both sides of the fabric are designed to be visible. Its smooth finish means that it would also be comfortable if worn next to the skin. A lining wouldn’t be required for any of these options, or for purposes of modesty, since this is a closely-knit fabric with excellent opacity for its weight. For any yoga enthusiasts amongst you, it should pass the ‘downward dog’ test without causing any gasps from people on surrounding mats…
What can I make with this fabric?
Tops, tunics, A-line dresses and lighter-weight outerwear too are all options for this dark navy structured ponte Roma jersey fabric. We think it’s a tremendously versatile fabric. It has sufficient resilience and opacity for closely-fitted trousers, including leggings. It will also work particularly well as an unlined jacket or blazer, particularly where a little shape is required. If you’re looking for a timeless wardrobe basic, then the ‘Maritime Knit Top’ from Liesl & Co is a classic boat-neck tee that you’ll be forever grateful for.
