This self-patterned turquoise silk satin fabric is the latest in our selection of luxury silks that have come to us via a high-end UK-based designer and their Italian manufacturers. Unfortunately this one is only available as part of our Silk Shirt Kit at the moment but contact us if you’re interested in purchasing independently.
What kind of fabric is this?
This is a 100% silk satin fabric with an abstract animal-print pattern woven into it. Closely-woven with the finely-textured surface you’d expect in a high-quality silk satin, we’d describe it as a lighter-weight dress or blouse fabric. It has a wonderful lustre to its finish. The weight per square metre is 80 grammes. The shade of turquoise here is quite blue, vibrant and eye-catching but not brash.
What does this fabric feel like?
This fabric has a beautifully soft, smooth handle. It’s breathable so a good option for warmer weather. It’s supremely soft and gentle next to the skin.
How does this fabric move?
Whether you decide to use it on the cross or hang it straight, our turquoise silk satin fabric ripples and falls just as you’d expect a high-quality silk to perform. You’ll need to take care to lay it out and pin carefully when working with it. A length of it will swing and drape with life and elegance as you can see in this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
Our turquoise silk satin fabric has excellent opacity for its weight; the depth of colour also helps. A top, blouse or tunic won’t need lining although you’ll need to consider your undergarments; the smoother the better. You will probably want to line, layer or wear a half-slip under a skirt or dress if you’re wearing it over hosiery in order to give it some freedom of movement.
What can I make with this fabric?
Draping, less structured designs are always going to be the forte of a fine fabric such as this turquoise silk satin fabric. As mentioned, we’ve featured it in our Silk Shirt Kit which uses the ‘Mélilot Shirt by Deer & Doe patterns; we like the covered front button placket and the simplicity of the sleeve set into the dropped shoulder.
Wash at 30 or 40 degrees – see our Fabric care pages for more information.
