We love the idea that in a summer which has largely cast the traditional pin-striped suit into an historical silo, this most summery of fabrics, a viscose-linen blend, is being offered as a silvery-grey pin-stripe. However we think you’ll go a long way before you find anything as smooth, lively and generally playful as this pin-striped viscose-linen fabric.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our pin-striped viscose-linen fabric is a medium-weight dress fabric with a stable chambray-style weave into which fine pin-stripes have been woven down its length. Although linen slubs and texture are part of the character of this fabric, the fact that viscose is the predominant fibre at 55% gives it a refinement that would be unusual in a 100% linen fabric.
Don’t forget that there’s no ease in fabrics with such a high proportion of linen so you’ll need to factor that into your garment choice and sizing. You’ll also need to pre-wash your fabric to ensure that any initial shrinkage is removed prior to cutting.
What does this fabric feel like?
This is a smooth, bouncing fabric which has texture in its weave but which will be supremely comfortable next to the skin. It’s breathable and our experience with this type of fabric is that they soften up very quickly but retain their structure too.
How does this fabric move?
This is a lively fabric which falls and swings beautifully, but which will hold a shape with character. You can see how it moves in this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
You won’t need to line a shirt, top or tunic made from this fabric, however a dress may require a bodice lining for structure depending on your pattern design. Unless you’re wearing it over bare legs, then you’ll need a half-slip to enable this fabric to move against your body. However this kind of fabric is usually used for summer-cool and more casual designs where a lining would probably defeat the object of the fabric. A loose dress will reveal some silhouette when backed by sunlight, but no more than is in keeping with the style of garment you’re likely to be considering.
What can I make with this fabric?
Our pin-striped viscose-linen fabric is a versatile fabric which we think will lend itself to shirts, tunics and simple dresses as much as summer separates. Loosely-fitted summer trousers will also be an option. We love the look of this new ‘Sydney’ Designer Dress from Style Arc which we think would be perfect for this lively fabric.
