Denim fabrics come in many shades and weights – and this dark blue stretch denim fabric sits firmly in the versatile centre of the spectrum. It’ll be perfect for casual garments including jeans and jackets, easy to work with and with just a little ease to help with fitting.
What kind of fabric is this?
This is a 98% cotton fabric with 2% spandex in a distinctive twill weave. The dark navy blue colour is quite solid on the right side, and shows in alternate diagonal weave rows on the reverse, as would be expected in a denim fabric. At 390g (13.5oz) per square metre, this is a solid medium-weight denim. The shade of navy blue is a very dark one but definitely not black. It’s indigo-dyed and as is usual with denim, that blue will fade with wear and washing.
What does this fabric feel like?
Our dark blue stretch denim fabric is smooth and slightly soft to the touch. It’s very stable, but is also quite pliable. It will be comfortable and breathable next to the skin.
How does this fabric move?
This fabric has a crisp structure that means it will hold a shape. Although it’s not a heavy denim, it doesn’t drape or swing however – rather, it falls into larger angled folds. You can see how it moves in this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
The colour, weight and close weave of this fabric mean that it has excellent opacity for its weight. Trousers and jackets won’t require a lining; traditionally denim garments have finished seams on the inside and show the reverse of the fabric.
What can I make with this fabric?
This is a classic medium-weight denim fabric and as such you’ll probably be looking for a suitable jeans or jacket fabric. The ‘Ginger’ Jeans from Closet Core are designed for medium weight denim with 2% elastane – a perfect match for this fabric. The CC website has lots of jeans-making guidance.
Sustainability
As a plant-based fibre, cotton is a natural product that can be grown easily. Cotton garments tend to be strong and durable and can be recycled. However current production levels of cotton will be increasingly difficult to sustain, especially when chemicals and large amounts of water are used to process cotton fabrics.
