We’ve hit the motherlode for you this season, with a range of delectable silk fabrics. This deep navy blue silk crepe-de-chine fabric is the latest in our selection and it’s safe to say we’re floating away on dreamy enchanted clouds in its company. This is a classic, high-quality silk fabric which has come to us via a high-end UK-based designer and their Italian manufacturers. Suffice to say, fabrics like this just don’t come along every week. The shade of navy blue here is a dark, rich one; a definite blue but slightly muted.
What kind of fabric is this?
This is a 100% silk crepe-de-chine fabric. Closely-woven with the finely-textured surface you’d expect in a crepe-de-chine, we’d describe it as a lighter-weight dress or blouse fabric. It has a very slight lustre to its finish. The weight per square metre is 80 grammes.
What does this fabric feel like?
This fabric has a slightly rippled but refined and cool handle. It’s breathable so a good option for warmer weather. It’s supremely soft and gentle next to the skin.
How does this fabric move?
Whether you decide to use it on the cross or hang it straight, our navy blue silk crepe-de-chine fabric flors, billows and ripples just as it did in our dreams. You’ll need to take care to lay it out and pin carefully when working with it. A length of it will swing and drape with life and elegance as you can see in this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
Our navy blue silk crepe-de-chine fabric has excellent opacity for its weight; the depth of colour also helps. A top, blouse or tunic won’t need lining although you’ll need to consider your undergarments; the smoother the better. You will probably want to line, layer or wear a half-slip under a skirt or dress if you’re wearing it over hosiery in order to give it some freedom of movement.
What can I make with this fabric?
Draping, less structured designs are always going to be its forte. We have plans for a ‘Mélilot Shirt by Deer & Doe patterns; we like the covered front button placket and the simplicity of the sleeve construction. Watch this space for pictures!
