We love the versatility of a good-quality cotton jersey – and this navy blue cotton jersey fabric is the latest one to join our rainbow. This is a rich, dark shade of navy blue – but nevertheless one that sits well clear of the ‘possibly black’ zone.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our navy blue cotton jersey fabric is a lovely medium-weight single-knit fabric. The yarns used here are fine and the knit is close, providing a fabric with very good opacity for its weight.
What does this fabric feel like?
The fine weave here means that this is a smooth fabric with a soft feel. However it isn’t a floppy fabric – it has good structure and resilience.
How does this fabric move?
Our navy blue cotton jersey fabric isn’t a fluid knit – but it hangs and swings with character. It has approximately 20% stretch-and-return across its width and length but this is due to the knit structure rather than any spandex content. You can see how it drapes and stretches in this video.
Will I need to line this fabric?
You won’t need to line a t-shirt, top or tunic; this jersey is substantial enough to cope in a single layer for most types of garment. However a skirt or dress would need a lining or a half-slip in order for it to move against the body, unless you’re wearing it over bare legs. Which we probably would, given the laid-back nature of this fabric.
What can I make with this fabric?
Tops, tunics, dresses and even lounge trousers would all be options for this classic single-knit. Style Arc have lots of patterns for layering jersey fabrics – from relaxed wrap cardigans to tunics and t-shirts in different styles. However we think the sheer classic simplicity of their Cruise Club Kim Dress is the perfect match for this navy blue cotton jersey fabric. It would be a fabulous ‘base layer’ for casual spring & summer dressing and would be beautifully soft and comfortable to wear.
