This delightful, classic black satin-backed crepe fabric is the latest colourway of this rather special yet versatile fabric. A key ‘going out’ fabric, it’s is based on luxurious yet relaxed fabrics with movement and the ability to reveal a shape underneath. Our black satin-backed crepe fabric is perfect for dressing up in that way – however it also has the potential for classic, elegant daywear. The face of the fabric is a rich, non-tinted shade of black, backed with a satin finish which is almost foil-like in its reflective qualities.
This is a fabric with a fabulous drape yet with plenty of structure to enable it to work for a wide range of garments. You can see how it moves and drapes in this video clip.
Dresses, skirts, trousers, suits; tops and tunics too – our black satin-backed crepe fabric is immensely versatile we think. Although not overly heavy in actual weight, it has good opacity and the handle and thickness of a medium-weight suiting fabric. It has a classic crepe texture on its surface, but with a somewhat smoother feel than a classic wool or triple crepe, for instance. However that’s only part of the story. As with its sister colourways, don’t dismiss the reverse side of this black satin-backed crepe fabric. We’ve folded it back in our images and video so you can see the delightful contrast in textures that can be achieved by using both sides of this fabric in a garment. Collars, lapels, cuffs, trimmings – all of these can be lit up using the satin side of this fabric which is has a fabulous lustre. In fact you could go the whole hog and use the reverse side of this fabric for your whole garment.
If you’re heading off into Little Black Dress territory then New Look Pattern 6567 has lots of options for elegant necklines and sleeve styles.
