We’re continuing our hunt for doubleknit fabrics that go beyond our usual expectations of your average ponte Roma jersey fabric. Our latest find is this rather fabulous Italian burgundy wool doubleknit jersey fabric which has returned for a second season with us. The colour of the burgundy here is a rich, slightly muted shade which will work wonderfully with charcoals, blacks, silver greys mustard and ochre yellows and tan accessories. We think it’s the perfect shade to enhance your autumnal wardrobe.
What kind of fabric is this?
With a massive 50% wool content and 50% acrylic, our burgundy wool doubleknit jersey fabric is very slightly thicker than the average ponte Roma jersey fabric, but without the weight that you might expect from a ponte Roma of similar thickness. It’s a fabric with excellent opacity which looks the same on both sides, so is suitable for ‘waterfall’ and other unlined jacket and outer-layer designs.
What does this fabric feel like?
Our burgundy wool doubleknit jersey fabrics a beautifully-smooth handle. It’s soft to the touch, but has a little substance too. it’s very comfortable next to the skin.
How does this fabric move?
This is a fabric with a little substance but it’s not at all stiff and has an elegant drape. It also has a surprisingly-resilient stretch-and-return as you can see from this video.
Will I need to line this fabric?
Although you could choose to self-line this fabric or use a stretch lining for an outerwear garment, it won’t need lining for purposes of modesty; neither will the inside require concealing since both sides of the fabric can be regarded as the ‘right’ side. (Although when you cut your garment we strongly recommend you choose a side as the ‘right’ side and stick to it). If you make a skirt or dress, then you may prefer to wear a half-slip in order to help this fabric move across your body and over hosiery.
What can I make with this fabric?
This is a fabric that we think will tread that fine line between holding a structured shape and falling gently around the body. We think it would be perfect for simple fit-and-flare or shift dresses to dress up or down through the winter months. It would also be a fabulous choice for an unlined jersey jacket – either a classic ‘Chanel’ style box jacket or a relaxed blazer.
We know that the ‘Coco’ dress by Tilly and the Buttons continues to be a popular choice and we think our burgundy wool doubleknit fabric would be the perfect choice.

Do make sure you pre-wash your fabrics before cutting. Ponte Roma jersey fabrics tend to hold colour well, but if there’s any initial dye loss then you’ll want to deal with that before sewing different colours together. Check out our Fabric preparation and care guidelines for more details.
