In the interest of spicing up our warmer weather wardrobe, we couldn’t resist this lively red viscose-linen fabric. It has the lightly-slubbed texture you’d associate with a refined linen but a very fine weave and more opacity than you might expect from a 100% linen fabric of this weight. Blouses, draping dresses and lingerie are all options for a fabric that will delight with fresh whites and creams, as well as with a vibrant summer pink, yellow and burnt orange palette.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our draping red viscose-linen fabric is a blend of viscose (74%) with linen. We’d describe it as a lighter-weight dress fabric which has very good opacity for its weight. It’s closely woven in a plain weave pattern with distinct but refined slubs in the weave.
There’s no ease in this fabric except for a little give on the bias, so you’ll need to factor that into your garment choice and sizing. You’ll also need to pre-wash your fabric to ensure that any initial shrinkage is removed prior to cutting.
What does this fabric feel like?
This is a smooth, bouncing fabric; cool and soft to the touch and very smooth next to the skin.
How does this fabric move?
Our red viscose-linen fabric is a lively cloth which falls and swings beautifully, but which will hold a soft shape with character. It falls into gently-bouncing rounded folds. You can see how it moves in this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
You won’t need to line a shirt, top or tunic made from this fabric, however a dress may require a bodice lining for structure depending on your pattern design. Unless you’re wearing it over bare legs, you may need a half-slip or lining to enable this fabric to move against your body. A dress or skirt will reveal a silhouette when backed by sunlight but if your pattern design has some volume, this will help obscure.
What can I make with this fabric?
We suggest finding pattern designs that will make the most of the draping movement of our red viscose-linen fabric. We think it will lend itself to shirts, tunics and dresses. Loosely-fitted summer trousers will also be an option, as will warmer-weather jumpsuits. We think the drape of this fabric makes it perfect for the ‘Elodie’ Wrap Dress from Closet Core Patterns.
