Our floating black linen fabric is a refined fabric which will bring a touch of class to your outfit. No, you may not want to deck yourself out in head-to-toe goth – but black can also work as an elegant toning ‘lowlight’ or a ground to help brighter colours pop. Place it with subdued neutrals; stone, dark olive and soft taupe browns for an understated combination. Alternatively let it help a brighter palette sing. This linen is perfect for blouses, tunics and shirts, especially those which will benefit from some subtle shape-holding.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our classic black linen fabric is a lighter-weight (150gsm) 100% linen fabric with a stable and lightly-slubbed weave. The slubs are part of the character of a linen fabric and although they’re not overly obvious, they provide a distinctive texture to this fabric.
Don’t forget that there’s no ease in linen fabrics so you’ll need to factor that into your garment choice and sizing.
What does this fabric feel like?
This is a crisp fabric but smooth and soft to the touch despite the evident texture in the weave. It’s breathable and our experience with these linens is that they soften up very quickly but retain their structure too. This is a fabric which will be cool and comfortable to wear next to the skin.
How does this fabric move?
This is a lively fabric which falls and swings beautifully, but which will hold a shape with character. You can see how it moves in this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
You won’t need to line a shirt, top or tunic made from this fabric but we suggest that you’ll want to opt for undergarments that don’t contrast with your skin tone. In particular, bright whites are likely to shine through the fine weave. A dress may require a bodice lining depending on the design and a skirt or dress would definitely need a half-slip or a lining to preserve modesty.
What can I make with this fabric?
Our floating black linen fabric is most suited to tops, shirts and blouses. The refined, fine weave will work beautifully for these, as for lingerie, especially robes. The ‘Mélilot’ Shirt from Deer & Doe is a particular favourite of ours. It has a classic, refined cut which is particularly suited to finer fabrics; the short sleeved version here shows that it works well for fabrics with a little gentle structure.
Linen is woven from flax which can be easily grown with fewer chemicals required to aid growth and process the fibres. It is generally considered to be one of the most sustainable types of fabric.
