We know that many of you love linen in the summer for its cool comfort and lively character. We like to ensure a steady flow of linen-based fabrics for those reasons and more – but linen knit? Not so easy to come by. This red linen jersey knit fabric then, was an instant win. It’s a very similar (if not the actual) fabric used to make a top which Alice unearthed in a French RTW boutique some years ago and which has done sterling summer duty ever since.
What kind of fabric is this?
This is a finely-knitted lighter-weight jersey fabric created mainly from linen, with a touch of polyamide for added structure. Our red linen jersey knit fabric is almost a semi-sheer fabric.
What does this fabric feel like?
As you’d expect from a linen fabric, this is a knit with a slightly crisp but cool and smooth handle. It will be comfortable to wear next to the skin and it’s breatheable too.
How does this fabric move?
Our red linen jersey knit fabric is a gently-draping fabric which holds a little bit of shape and skims a little over lumps and bumps. It has a little mechanical ease across its width and a little less down the length – but there’s no spandex element here. You can see how it moves and stretches in this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
You won’t need to line a garment made from our red linen jersey knit fabric, however if you wear it as a top or tunic, you should be prepared for contrasting underwear to show through .
What can I make with this fabric?
Tops, tunics and t-shirts as well as lingerie are all options for our claret micromodal jersey fabric. Although it could technically be used for a simple draped or slip dress, this is a fine jersey knit which we think is more suited to tops rather than more substantial garments.
However another option for this fine jersey knit is to use it as a draping summer layer – it would be perfect as a shrug or cardigan over a summer top or dress. We like the ‘Blackwood’ Cardigan by Helen’s Closet Patterns for its gentle drape – perfect over a summer camisole or slip dress.
