On the look-out for shirting fabrics with which to replenish our collections, we fell across this black and red checked cotton twill fabric and recognised it instantly for the casual classic that it is.
It’s the perfect fabric either for channeling retro trends from the 90s or 1950s or for weekends alternating odd-jobs and some feet-up time. This black and red checked cotton twill fabric is a soft-to-wear, lighter-weight fabric. We think it will layer well in colder weather but it will also still be cool to wear when the sun appears.
A shirt in this cotton check would be a wardrobe favourite for years to come. Soft against the skin but with enough structure to hold its own, this black and red cotton twill fabric also has a gentle drape as you can see from this video.
Despite its lighter weight it has very good opacity due to its fine weave and depth of colour. Shirts are obviously options; tunics and other tops will also work well. We’d suggest that shirt dresses will be as far as you’ll want to go in the dress department – and even then they’ll be more casual and layered affairs.
If you’re on the hunt for a tried-and-tested shirt pattern for this black and red check cotton twill fabric then may we suggest the ‘Archer’ Button Up Shirt pattern from Grainline Studio.
This is a really straight-forward shirt pattern with excellent instructions including an online sew-along guide. We’ve used it a couple of times now – you can see the results in this blog!
