On paper a red and black print sounds brash and a bit of an eyeful. However that couldn’t be further from the case with this delicate black and burgundy printed viscose challis fabric. The print design is a finely-etched, dense floral with shadows of white and silver-grey softening the borders of the black.
What kind of fabric is this?
This is is a finely-woven, lighter-weight viscose fabric. Challis fabrics are characterised by a plain weave pattern and a relaxed drape, which is exactly what we have here. The print design is on a small scale but spread across a large area (see our image with a ruler).
What does this fabric feel like?
Our black and burgundy printed viscose challis fabric has a particularly soft and gentle handle. It will be cool and very comfortable next to the skin and since viscose is a cellulose-based fibre, it will be breathable too.
How does this fabric move?
As with most viscose fabrics, this is a cloth that loves to flow and ripple. You can see how our burgundy printed viscose challis fabric moves and drapes in this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
The weave of this fabric is plain and fairly close, with good opacity for its weight due to the print design. You’ll be just fine with an unlined blouse or tunic and for less formal, more carefree occasions an unlined dress or skirt in this fabric will be perfectly acceptable, especially more voluminous or draped designs. However a silhouette may be visible against bright lights and so depending the design of a dress or skirt, a plain cotton lawn lining or a half-slip might be advisable. Shadows from contrasting undergarments may be visible through the lighter-coloured areas of this fabric.
What can I make with this fabric?
We think our rippling burgundy printed viscose challis fabric will be perfect for tops, shirts, tunics and dresses too. Simple designs will make best use of its print; relaxed and draping patterns will make the most of its drape; this isn’t a fabric to use in a structured garment. The ‘Sadie’ Top from Style Arc will use the drape of this fabric in the distinctive sleeves and the simple shape will work well as a layer under a jacket or cardigan too.
