This midnight blue stretch cotton drill fabric is our latest arrival into our stable of practical yet elegant drills and twills. The shade of navy blue here treads a careful path through the middle of the spectrum without teetering to green or grey. It’s a good medium-weight drill with a close, refined weave and excellent opacity.
What kind of fabric is this?
This is a cotton drill fabric with just a little elastane; enough to give a smidgeon of fitting and movement ease across the width of the fabric but nothing more. It’s a solid medium-weight cotton drill, with a weave structure similar to a good denim denims; smooth, almost sateen-like on the outside.
What does this fabric feel like?
This is a sturdy fabric but very pliable and with a very smooth, refined and soft feel. Despite its structure it will be beautifully-comfortable next to the skin as trousers or a skirt.
How does this fabric move?
Our midnight blue stretch cotton drill fabric is a robust cloth which holds a shape. It doesn’t drape but falls into soft folds. You can see how it moves and stretches in this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Do I need to line this fabric?
Trousers or a utility skirt; even a casual coat or jacket won’t require lining, although visible seams will need to be finished well. However for more structured jackets or formal garments, a lining will add structure and will help with movement across the body as well as taking them on and off easily. Its opacity and structure mean that modesty is not an issue, either on the bottom or top half of the body.
What can I make with this fabric?
Trousers, skirts, jackets and trench-style coats are all options. Pinafore dresses and simple tunics will also work well. Casual jean-style jackets, fitted jean-style trousers are also possibilities, as are utility or workwear style garments such as the ‘Ottoline’ Jacket from Merchant & Mills.
