Offered up as a printed satin, this fabulous Italian ivory and navy blue printed foulard fabric was a must-have as soon as we saw it. Its pattern design echoes the traditional Japanese printing technique of ‘Itajime’ where a piece of cloth is folded then clamped to prevent the dye from reaching specific areas of the fabric. This results in the slightly irregular geometric print pattern that you can see in this ivory and navy blue printed foulard fabric.
We’ve referred to it as a ‘foulard’ since it’s not the straightforward satin you might think it to be upon first encounter. When handled, the drape is just slightly different; it’s marginally crisper and inclined to fall in more rounded folds. A closer look reveals the distinctive twill weave of a lightweight foulard fabric.
You’ll be most familiar with a ‘foulard’ fabric in the shape of classic headscarves. Our ivory and navy blue printed foulard fabric is perhaps a slightly lighter-weight version but still with a lovely drape and movement as you can see from this video.
This is a beautiful-quality fabric. Although a polyester, our ivory and navy blue printed foulard fabric is a fabric of real refinement and has surprisingly good opacity for its weight, due we think to the fine nature of the weave. You’ll simply want to pay a little attention to undergarments if wearing a blouse, top or tunic.
It could indeed be used for a dress – but you’d want to look at a design that made the most of the draping qualities of this ivory and navy blue foulard fabric. You’d also need a lining in order to provide the required opacity and structure.
If you’re in search of pattern ideas, then you’ll want to know that this fabric is an option in our ClothSpot Slinky Shirt Kit – so perfect for a glamorous blouse!
It’s a design which should use the elegant draping qualities of this fabric particularly well, working as a daytime as well as an evening garment.
We suggest hand-washing this finely-woven fabric in order to avoid damaging it in a machine. See our Fabric care pages for more information.
