This navy blue stretch cotton sateen fabric is a classic summer fabric. We’re great aficionados of stretch cotton sateen and this classy number has arrived from Italy via a high-end UK design house. It’s supremely versatile, easy to work and practical too – yet the subtle sheen on the surface of the fabric lifts it out of the workaday and into a slightly more upmarket bracket. The shade of navy blue here is deep and rich but very slightly muted. You’d look twice to make sure it wasn’t black, but it’s very definitely a blue..
What kind of fabric is this?
This is a cotton sateen with a very small amount of stretch. It has a plain-woven reverse side but the face of the fabric has a satin weave which reflects a little light, giving it a distinctive lustre. This is a lighter-weight sateen; perfect for warmer weather wear.
What does this fabric feel like?
Our navy blue stretch cotton sateen fabric has a smooth, very crisp handle. Although it’s not a soft or ‘floppy’ fabric it will be cool and comfortable next to the skin as a pair of trousers. It’s not at all bulky; it has the weight of a fine cotton poplin but with a much smoother finish. It’s very pliable and easy to work.
How does this fabric move?
This is a fabric with the ability to hold some shape. It doesn’t drape or flow; it falls into angled folds. The stretch element here is a very slight one across the width of the fabric – just enough for a little ease in a tightly-fit garment.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
As you’d expect in a sateen, our navy blue stretch cotton sateen fabric has very good opacity. You wouldn’t need to line a skirt or trousers for purposes of modesty, comfort or structure. If you were making a dress, skirt or jacket then you might want to add a lining for ease of movement over hosiery or other clothes.
What can I make with this fabric?
Any summer separates would be perfect in this stone stretch sateen fabric. Pencil or shorter skirts, loosely-fitted trousers and shirt dresses are all options. We’re very partial to sateen trousers and the ‘Fifi’ Cropped Pant from Style Arc is perfect for this lighter-weight navy blue stretch cotton sateen fabric.
